How can students help make Victoria, BC the best cycling city?

What is this all about?

Learning to live well with others on a finite planet has become an essential and urgent task.  With a critically optimistic spirit this website showcases inspiring examples of sustainabilityresilience, regeneration or whatever we want to call the brave efforts to make another world possible

Here you will find engaging digital stories that have been compiled by University of Victoria Geography students participating in various field courses or other experiential learning opportunities in the region some call Cascadia (on the Northwest Coast of Turtle Island) or Europe.

We support the struggles of First Nations communities for dignity and sovereignty. There will be no "sustainability" in this region while Indigenous peoples remain dispossessed of their territories.

What's new?

In May 2023 students from the University of Victoria will have the opportunity to travel and study ambitious sustainability efforts in cities of Western Europe. This year's itinerary rolls from Bergen, Norway to Paris, France.

Click here for more information and to apply for this program (open to UVic students).

In 2016 the field school was set in the Cascadia region (Pacific Northwest). We traveled down the coast from our home of Victoria,BC through Vancouver, Seattle, Portland, Mt Hood, and communities on the Oregon Coast. We met with activists, First Nations, planners and others struggling to bring socio-ecological justice to the region.

In 2017, we developed a super cool course. It targeted students concerned with social justice, ecological sustainability, and good food, who were also concerned with finding a livelihood that aligned with their values. The course was co-lead by entrepreneur Chris Hildreth (of Topsoil Innovative Urban Agriculture) and Cam Owens (UVic Geography).

In 2019 our field school explored sustainability initiatives in Western Europe traveling south to north from Spain to Denmark. We met with planners, activists, community leaders and others grappling with socio-ecological challenges in cities of Seville, Madrid, Barcelona, Paris, Amsterdam, Hamburg and Copenhagen.

For information on the field school check out the UVic Geography page here.

In 2017, the field school traveled from Paris up through Bruges, Antwerp, Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Hamburg, and finished in Copenhagen exploring initiatives in sustainable community development. Paris provided the perfect start to the trip, getting us thinking about Modernity, the Modern city, and the concerns with the modern city that have lead to the sustainability challenges we face. We also made connections back to Canada visiting WW2 sites during this the 100th Anniversary of the Battle of Vimy Ridge.

In 2018, students from the University of Victoria traveled to the UK and Western Europe meeting with planners, activists, community leaders and others grappling with the sustainability challenges facing cities. They completed a video-blog sharing what we learned in Manchester, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Amsterdam, Hamburg and Copenhagen.

About the Cascadia Sustainability Experience

Each summer the Cascadia Sustainability Field School provides UVic students an opportunity to travel down the coast and learn about the inspiring efforts towards social justice and environmental sustainability in our region.

The Cascadia Sustainability Experience evolved out of the students' and instructors' desire to share experiences and insights from the field. On the trips we have shot hundreds of hours of video trying to capture the stories, insights and hands-on efforts of the amazing, creative people in our region making a difference.

The videos on this site are offered in a spirit of giving back to the community; to inspire - to teach - to cultivate new ways of living in this region!

The Cascadia Sustainability Experiences gratefully acknowledges the support of the Teaching and Learning Center  and the Community Mapping Collaboratory (Ken Josephson) at the University of Victoria. Shout outs to former UVic student Amy Becker who designed this website.
