Research Scientist, Fisheries and Oceans Canada
Pacific Biological Station

I have 29 years experience with Fisheries and Oceans Canada, 5 years in the Canadian Maritimes on scallops and 13 years as Head, Shellfish Stock Assessment at Nanaimo. For the past decade, I have focused my research on conservation biology issues, and specifically marine protected areas, research in support of ecosystem-based management, invasive species and critical habitat definition for Species at Risk. I am currently involved in identifying ecologically and biologically significant areas (EBSAs) in Pacific Canada, and it is expected that many of these may ultimately become regional marine protected areas (MPAs).   Identification of EBSAs is involving research tools such as optimisation models (e.g. MARXAN), which are also used in proposing a network of mpas to allow both the achievement of conservation and sustainable renewable resource utilisation.

Recent work has focused on marine biogeoclimatic zone classification and locating high-density coral and h exactinellid sponge locations. I am particularly interested in supervising graduate students in the following subject areas: habitat classification, identification of rare and limiting habitats and their associated communities, MPA network design, and the development of appropriate monitoring protocols for the achievement of ecosystem-based management. I obtained my doctorate in zoology (UBC) in 1973 in systems ecology, and am also an affiliate professor at the Fisheries Centre, UBC. I was an affiliate professor at the University of Washington School of Fisheries from 1986 to 1992, and over my career, have supervised a number of both M.Sc. and Ph.D students. I am presently co-supervising through UBC a Ph.D. student on invasive tunicates and am on the committee of a M.Sc. student studying regional intertidal invasive species. Internationally, I am co-chairing a North Pacific Marine Science Organization ( PICES) working Group on ecosystem-based management.
